Chapter 20

RIVER

I’m all smiles driving home after work that night in the blue Audi. The top is down and the air is in my hair.

Because it’s L.A., I spend a lot of time at traffic lights, surrounded by cars. A bunch of different guys check me out, flashing smiles and shooting flirtatious looks or outright asking for my number. I smile politely but don’t respond to any of them.

I don’t remember guys ever checking me out this much in the past. It must be the car. It’s fun to be the center of attention for once.

Before I left work, I tried to find Drakken so I could thank him for the Audi, but he wasn’t anywhere at the resort. Neither was his Lamborghini.

When I get home, I park in the lot behind the bungalows. I climb out of the car and beep the alarm.

“What the fuck?” Stone asks, standing behind the Audi. He’s shirtless, his arms are folded across his chest, and his muscles bulge and twitch. “Where’s Sheena?”

“Long story?” I haven’t told him anything about Drakken.

“I’ve got time,” my brother says, sounding vaguely parental.

“It’s a loaner. Sheena is in the shop.” I figure telling mostly the truth will set him at ease. I just have to leave the more exciting parts out if I don’t want him freaking out.

“What? Why?”

“Uh, I sort of hit a curb a few weeks ago and messed up my alignment.”

“What?” he barks. “How’d you hit a curb?”

“It was on the way to work. Some guy—” I stop myself short.

Stone eyes me shrewdly, “Some guy what?”

I slump my shoulders and groan, “Some guy swerved into my lane or whatever. So I ran into the sidewalk trying to get out of the way.”

“What?” he barks, concerned. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I’m fine, Stone. Don’t worry about it. It’s ancient history.”

I always appreciate that my brother cares as much as he does, even though it can be irritating at times. Times when I’m trying to hide aspects of the truth I don’t want him knowing about. Truths like giving a rich guy a hand job at work and getting a new Audi in return.

Stone nods, “Okay. What happened to your Chevy?”

“A bunch of the arms are broken.”

“What?”

“I don’t remember. The mechanic guy said the arms needed to be fixed.”

“Control arms?”

I walk toward the bungalows, hoping to draw Stone away from the Audi so he’ll stop asking about it. “Something like that.” I pull out my house keys out of habit, but the door to our bungalow is open.

Stone follows me inside. “And what’s the deal with the Audi? You said it’s a loaner?”

My plan to distract Stone didn’t work. Strategy is not my strong suit. I should probably stick to playing dumb. That seems to work well most of the time. But this is my brother. He won’t fall for it. “Yeah. The repair shop loaned me the Audi,” I say it like it’s no big deal.

Stone blusters, “Nobody gives an Audi convertible for a loaner. That car costs like fifty K.
